The 9 th Annual Conference of All India Association for Advancing Research in Obesity (AIAARO) was held on 21 st and 22 nd December 2013, at Kolkata. It was organized by AIAARO West Bengal Branch, in association with the Obesity and Lifestyle Diseases Clinic, IPGMER/SSKM Hospital, Kolkata and Society for Nutrition and Dietetics (SND). It was the first conference on obesity held in the Eastern India.
The conference was attended by more than 320 delegates and 69 faculty. The scientific presentations were of a high quality and appreciated by all. The contributions of the national and international faculty enhanced the scientific value. The enthusiastic interactions by the delegates with the speakers reflected the liveliness of the proceedings. Under the able leadership of Prof. Samar Banerjee and Dr. Shashank Joshi, Scientific Chairman, the Organizing Secretary-Dr. Soumitra Ghosh and his team had put their heart and soul to make this event a great scientific and social success. Despite personal and family health problems, the Organizing Secretary left no stone unturned in attending to all the deliverables of the conference: The scientific content, choice of the faculty, delegate kit, mementos and hospitality arrangements. The precision and attention to details was impressive.
The conference was inaugurated Madam Chandrima Bhattacharya - Hon. Minister of State for Law and Judicial Department and Health and Welfare Department of the Government of West Bengal. The minister, in her address, emphasized the urgent need of early preventive and educative measures to control the epidemic of obesity and diabetes. She stressed the positive role that sports, games, yoga and exercise can play in schools [Figure 1], [Figure 2], [Figure 3], [Figure 4].
Prof. Pradip Kumar Mitra-Director, the Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research - Government of West Bengal was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Pallavi Sodhi Patankar - the President of AIAARO, in her address said that the health-care professionals, integrative therapists, the government bodies and the educational systems must initiate collective efforts for policy changes and innovative reforms in systems. These should reduce the incidence of obesity and the ancillary risk factors. The financial burden of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease is huge. Preventive Bariatrics is the need of the hour.
The speakers did great justice to their respective topics. A few names which come to mind are: Dr. Anoop Misra, Dr. Richard Atkinson, Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar, Dr. Ramen Goel, Dr. Ajay Kumar, Dr. Naval Vikram, Dr. Sudhir Bhandari, Dr Shashank Joshi, Dr. Shashank Shah, Dr. Rama Vaidya etc., All the lectures were very informative and delivered with clarity, quality and state-of-the art information.
Dr. Mohd Ismail Noor, the President of Malaysia Association for the Studies in Obesity (MASO), was invited to grace the conference as a speaker. He made an excellent presentation. He also announced the ICO 2014 to be held in Malaysia. He invited delegates to participate in the conference. AIAARO was grateful for his visit.
Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar (USA) gave timely inputs for the conference. He was instrumental for having Dr. Richard Atkinson, Babu Balgopal, Dr. Seema Kumar, Dr. Philip Brantley accept our invitation to the conference. Their presentations, discussions and presence added altogether a very special impact to the conference. Enthusiastic and high participation of upcoming doctors in paper presentation and poster presentation reflected their interest in academics generated by the conference. The scene in the paper presentation hall was very lively. The sports activity and early morning Yoga Session conducted by Dr. Pallavi Patankar was well attended and appreciated.
The untiring efforts of Dr. Ashok Vaidya, the Chief Editor, Dr. Ramen Goel, the Co-Chief Editor, Dr. Rama Vaidya, Ms. Hiteshi Dhami, Dr. Namyata Pathak, Dr. Jeethan Bendoor and Ms. Zenish Dholia actualized the launch of the first issue of JOMR during AIAAROCON KOLKATA-2013. The JOMR was much appreciated.
The release of the JOMR-The first issue, the valuable tips and encouragement from the President, Dr. Pallavi Sodhi Patankar and support of sponsors with the help from Dr. Banshi Saboo, Dr. Shashank Joshi and others was a great help indeed. Dr. Deepak Jumani, the Hon. treasurer, had taken care of the smooth running of the conference by guiding the audiovisual and time frames. We also thank the volunteers who did a marvelous job.
AIAAROCON 2013 will always have a special reference in future for the following reasons: (1) The West Bengal Chapter of AIAARO was formalized. (2) the launch of JOMR and (3) the high standard and protocol set for the future AIAAROCONs to follow. The Conference received positive feedback and was adjudged as a memorable feast of wisdom. The next AIAAROCON 2014 will be held at Jaipur-Rajasthan. This was decided and approved in the AGM.
