For the significant contributions to Medical Education, Research and Endocrinology he was honored with the award of Padma Shri by the President of India (2014).

The research contributions by Dr. Joshi cover a broad range of topics, including diabetes, obesity, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, and growth disorders. He has more than 400 research publications and authored more than 18 books and monographs. He is the Emeritus Editor of the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India and Consultant Editor of the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has honored Dr. Shashank R. Joshi with the International Clinician Award for delivering outstanding care to endocrine patients. Dr. Joshi has been invited to National and International conferences and workshops for keynote addresses and orations in the field of obesity, diabetes and endocrine disorders. He has been a leader in the fields of medical education and capacity building for diabetes and endocrinology. Dr. Joshi is known to be outspoken and forthright in his views. Our association and JOMR feel proud that Dr. Joshi has been recognized for his contributions to endocrinology.

Prof. (Dr.) Daya Kishore Hazra is a senior outstanding physician-scientist with a strong academic background in nuclear medicine and endocrinology. For several decades, he has been an active leader in the professional societies in India and abroad. Dr. Hazra was the Former Dean of the Indian College of Physicians. He was the International President of the Nuclear Medicine Society. For decades, he has been a guiding light of Endocrinology and Metabolic Disorders at the Agra Medical College. His expertise in nuclear medicine and radioimmunoassays and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and biomedical technology made him an early leader of evidence-based endocrinology. As a professor and research scientist he was a friend, philosopher and guide to several generations of medical students in India. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in the year 1977. Dr. Hazra received a most deserved, but belated recognition of Padma shri this year by the President of India.

His pioneering contribution of monitoring thyroid-stimulating hormone in hypothyroidism, in a large clinical series, has a major impact in thyroidology. Displeasing some major figures in the medical establishment he showed that global use of iodized salt had an adverse impact. The effects were more in women. He stressed the fact that our ground water and vegetables contained sufficient iodine. He has pioneered several epidemiology studies in obesity, diabetes, and other diseases. As early as in 1976 he had a paper on the small intestinal functions in diabetes mellitus. He has 100's of original research papers and many chapters and books to his credit. Despite his papers in the major world journals, he steadily published in Indian medical journals and enhanced their quality. JOMR conveys compliments to Dr. DK. Hazra, a physician-scientist of repute with disarming simplicity and humility for receiving the national recognition of Padma Shri.
